As a professional travel writer of nearly a decade, I feel as though I have travel down to a science, from nailing the right comfy footwear to packing all my documents into the perfect organizer. But traveling with fine jewelry has always left me feeling frustrated and defeated; I’d tenderly pack everything into pouches, Ziploc bags, and even my cosmetics case, only to arrive at my destination with a tangled mess. It’s gotten to the point where I’ve stopped packing jewelry altogether to avoid the trouble.

Now, with so many efficient travel jewelry cases on the market, I no longer have an excuse. I researched those with the organizing power of a jewelry box (minus the bulkiness), then tested a slew of popular styles, from compact mini ring cases to hanging organizers.

Below are all the most intuitive designs that kept my necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings secure and separated — even as I tossed them around my apartment to mimic the chaos of the baggage claim carousel.

3 Best Travel Jewelry Cases:

Hanging jewelry organizer

An easy-to-use hanging travel case that keeps necklaces secure and untangled while fitting easily (and flatly) into a carry-on.

Best overall: Hammacher Schlemmer The Organized Jewelry Travel Case

Black jewelry case

My favorite feature of this stylish, cube-shaped case is its removable insert, which has four folding zippered pouches that kept my jewelry perfectly separate and organized, without me having to drape them precisely into narrow buckles or loops.

It comfortably and efficiently accommodates tiny and chunky jewelry. The pouches are transparent, and I appreciated being able to see where everything is as I’m deciding what to pack or wear.

For non-perfect packers like myself, this case makes it easy to feel like an organized person: It has the right balance of interior storage mechanisms (earring tree, ring holder, pouches) and empty spaces for throwing items in without any fuss.

For example, my bangles didn’t fit in any of the compartments or holders, so I tossed them into the main space. The whole thing is easy to zip closed — even if you overstuff it — and it has a cute little handle for carrying on its own.

Best budget: Bagsmart Dazzling Jewelry Organizer

A jewelry organizer binder

This lightweight, affordable organizer from Bagsmart performed incredibly well, offering an impressive amount (and types) of storage for a variety of sized pieces. Because its flat, pillowy quilted exterior isn’t stiff — it’s made of soft, water-resistant polyester fabric, as opposed to leather or vegan leather — it can stuff more easily into a suitcase, without any bulkiness that more structured cases have.

Inside, the transparent loose-leaf design has metal binder rings (it reminded me of my elementary school trapper keepers — in a good way!), so it’s not the most elegant or style-forward option I tested.

Still, it comfortably stores and secures a surprising amount of pieces, almost in a Mary Poppins’ bag type of way. Beyond just traveling, I would use this case for everyday jewelry storage.

Best for necklaces: Away Hanging Jewelry Organizer

Hanging jewelry organizer

This roomy organizer is very thoughtfully designed, with plenty of space for a diverse assortment of jewelry, from the fine to the chunky. I appreciated all the smart compartments for securing jewelry in place — my necklaces, in particular, didn’t budge, thanks to two different mechanisms for holding them in place. It closes super easily even if you overstuff it, which I appreciate as someone who doesn’t always have time to pack things delicately.

I had some trouble buckling in my super-thick necklaces, but they fit easily in the large main compartment. That’s what I loved the most: All of my pieces had multiple options for where I could put them. The interior microfiber lining is silky-soft — the exact type of material I want brushing up against precious metals.

I also love that I can hang it in a hotel room closet when I get to my destination. The case is minimalist, highly functional, and clearly designed by a brand whose focus is travel.

Best for earrings: Mejuri Travel Case

Tightly securing precious earrings and a few rings, this chic mini case is compact enough to throw in your purse or carry-on when you only need to bring a few small pieces. It’s made of sturdy grain leather on the outside and anti-tarnish microsuede on the inside and really looks and feels like a luxury product.

It has all the smart storage you’d want for an assortment of earrings, like four small hooks and six earring holes. The four buckled hooks are also great for hanging small, delicate necklaces and bracelets, with an elastic pocket underneath to catch the slack.

However, it didn’t fit my oversized hoops that well. If you have a big, broad collection of pieces you’re hoping to travel with, this mini case won’t cut it. There’s an option to monogram, which would make this case a pretty gift.

Best for rings: Cuyana Travel Jewelry Case

This compact, teeny-tiny Cuyana jewelry case is sturdy and gorgeous, with a soft Italian leather exterior and suede interior. The six color options are very pretty and luxe-feeling, as is the oval silhouette. Even though it’s mini, the detachable earring strap holds three pairs of small earrings, with an elastic compartment for placing slightly larger earrings and bracelets.

I found this case to be the very best travel jewelry case for rings. Any that didn’t fit on the suede holder, which attaches and detaches with a peg, easily fit in the pouches on either side (the ring holder dimensions are 0.5 inches by 3.6 inches.)

Most of my jewelry is pretty oversized, so this option is not practical for me personally, but it would be ideal for throwing in a weekend bag for a shorter getaway.

Best leather: Truffle Privacy Travel Jewelry Case

Lilac case

Simply put, this pretty square leather case has so many different ways to store jewelry, which made the experience of packing and unpacking super seamless.

The bulk of the case consists of a larger pouch, which includes adorable little standalone envelopes to hold individual items. Inside, there are two sides with storage for rings and earrings, with small elastic pockets, six holes for earrings, and three loops for rings or anything else.

User-friendly, smartly designed and elegant, this organizer really took me by surprise. I’d use it for everyday storage, beyond just traveling.

Best roll: Leatherology Buckled Jewelry Roll

Leather roll

When I finished packing my jewelry into this handsome leather case (which was super intuitive to use and surprisingly roomy), I marveled at just how easily it rolled up and buckled into a super-chic clutch. As a proud chunky ring, bracelet and earring owner, I didn’t have to struggle to fit any of my larger pieces onto the spacious leather ring bar or earring panel or zipped pockets. The ring holder is longer than most, with lots of extra space for thicker pieces.

There is a timeless, non-trendy feeling to this roll that I really loved: It feels and looks well-made and polished, with the exact right amount of space for storage but nothing bulky about it. At $115 it’s on the higher end of travel jewelry cases I tested, but the design and craftsmanship are exceptional.

Best for gifting: Mark & Graham Medium Travel Jewelry Case

Travel jewelry box

For a practical gift with a personal touch, this rectangular vegan leather jewelry case is easy to personalize (for $15 more)—choose between foil debossed or printed letters to spell out your recipient’s name or initials. As a jewelry organizer, it’s effective at keeping everything in its proper place, and it’s one of the more stylish cases I tested. Like all the best cases, it has so many options for storage, including a removable double-sided pouch, tabs for rings and stud earrings, and loops to prevent necklaces from tangling.

If you travel with lots of jewelry, it also comes in a Large size with extra removable pouches. Read more in our guide to the best jewelry boxes.

How I tested the best travel jewelry cases

An assortment of travel jewelry cases.

Maria Yagoda/Business Insider

I packed ten cases with jewelry of all shapes and sizes from my collection (and borrowed a few pieces from my friends), noting how long it took to store everything in its proper place and how well all the buckles, zippers and holders functioned.

To mimic the chaotic journey a suitcase might take through an airport, I tossed each case back and forth in my apartment for a good two minutes. Then, I opened the case to see how well the pieces stayed in their proper places, and assessed how easy it was to unpack all my jewelry.

Here are a couple methods for protecting delicate necklaces:

  • Avoid overcrowding. To prevent chains from tangling, use a travel jewelry roll with necklace hooks, ring rolls and independent zippered pouches. Store one piece per compartment so they don’t interlock.
  • Use Saran wrap. For any really fine chains, lay the entire length of the necklace flat atop some cling wrap, then roll it up gently and stow it in its own pouch.

What to look for in the best travel jewelry cases

Size. Many of the most popular jewelry travel cases are really only made for small, dainty, delicate pieces. If you wear chunky earrings or bangles, look for a larger travel jewelry case. Within the jewelry case, pay attention to earring loop and ring holder sizes, to make sure all your favorite pieces will fit.

Materials. Look for tarnish-proof fabrics and sturdy, long-lasting materials like leather. For the interior lining, look for suede, linen, or other fabrics that are soft and non-abrasive to avoid microscratches.

Ease of Use. Removable pockets and pouches give you multiple options for storage, allowing you to choose the way you’d like to pack your pieces, whether that’s securing them into a buckled holder or simply zipping them into a pocket.
