More Than 2,600 US Stores Are Closing This Year

Updated

  • At least nine retail brands have said they’re closing US stores this year, totaling over 2,600 locations.
  • Twice-bankrupt Party City is the largest chain on the list, with 700 stores facing closure.
  • Starbucks is the latest company to announce store closures.

A Business Insider tally of disclosures from nine retail chains found more than 2,600 stores have closed or are set to close across the US in 2025.

The current number is up slightly from last year’s total but down from 2023, when the collapse of Bed Bath & Beyond contributed to the shuttering of more than 2,800 locations.

UBS analysts last year estimated US retail closures could reach 45,000 stores by 2029, led largely by smaller stores going out of business.

Meanwhile, larger firms such as Walmart, Costco, Target, and Home Depot continue to expand.

Topping this year’s list is the twice-bankrupt Party City, which filed for Chapter 11 protection in late December with 700 stores facing closure.

See the list of major closures below.

GameStop said in a March financial filing that it plans to close a “significant number” of stores in 2025, following an “optimization review” that took into account individual store performance.

The review is ongoing, so the exact number of stores closing this year isn’t yet set. It’s the latest in a series of closings for the company — GameStop shut down 590 of its US stores in fiscal 2024.

After the closures, about 350 Joann stores will remain in the US.

Starbucks said Thursday that it planned to close about 1% of its 11,453 corporately owned stores in the US.

The closures will affect locations where the company says it has been “unable to create the physical environment our customers and partners expect” or where it doesn’t “see a path to financial performance.”

Kroger said in June that it planned to close about 60 stores nationwide over the next 18 months. The supermarket giant did not identify which specific stores would be shuttered. According to SEC filings, as of February 1, Kroger operated 2,731 supermarkets across 35 states and the District of Columbia.

CEO Ron Sargent said during a first-quarter earnings call that the chain also plans to expand into “high-growth geographies.”
