Apple and Issey Miyake are teaming up on a slinky new accessory.
The companies on Tuesday announced their new iPhone Pocket, a 3D-knitted pouch meant to hold an iPhone and other “pocketable” items. The tube-like shape features a ribbed structure reminiscent of the fashion brand’s signature pleats and draws from Issey Miyake’s “a piece of cloth” concept, which used a continuous tube of fabric that could be cut into seamless items of clothing.
The accessory will come in eight different colours, including lemon, sapphire and black, intentionally chosen to compliment Apple’s product range. It will be available in two sizes, one with a short strap and one long, retailing for $149.95 and $229.95, respectively. The iPhone Pocket will be available in limited quantities at select Apple stores and online on Nov. 14.
Apple’s most notable fashion partnership over the years has been with luxury house Hermès, which offers straps for the Apple Watch. But Apple and the Issey Miyake brand have long had an unofficial connection through Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, whose preferred black turtle neck was designed by Miyake.
In a statement, Yoshiyuki Miyamae, design director of Miyake design studio, said the simplicity of the iPhone Pocket echoes the Issey Miyake brand’s idea of “leaving things less defined to allow for possibilities and personal interpretation.”
