Three persons were arrested on Thursday (December 11, 2025) in Dharmapuri after a woman died during an abortion performed at home earlier this month.
K. Ramya, 26, of Poochur near Eriyur, was the mother of two daughters and had recently become pregnant again. According to the police, on December 1, her husband Kannan, 35, informed her relatives that she had died after falling down the stairs. The family, however, grew suspicious about the circumstances of her death, and the Eriyur police subsequently registered a case.
Investigations revealed that Kannan, with the help of a nurse Suganya, 35, of Omalur in Salem district, and a mediator Vanitha, 35, had illegally conducted a scan at a private scanning centre and found that the foetus was female.
Kannan then decided to terminate Ramya’s pregnancy, and on December 1, through Suganya and Vanitha, he allegedly attempted to abort the foetus at home. However, due to excessive bleeding, Ramya developed complications and was rushed to the hospital. She died on the way.
On Thursday, the Eriyur police arrested Kannan, Vanitha, and Suganya, and remanded them in prison.
