All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), Goa, is collaborating with the State Government to position itself in competition to grow as a major centre for promoting wellness and medical tourism in India alongside established hubs for Ayurveda including — Kerala and Uttarakhand.
The Institute has requested the State government for an additional 50-acre land to aid its development as a major player in holistic and wellness industry offering integrated and preventive medical care.
Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi just over three years ago, the Institute located in North Goa’s Dhargal serves as a key centre for Ayurveda education, research, and patient care.
Speaking to The Hindu, Pradeep Kumar Prajapati, director, AIIA (Goa) said: “The Institute now caters not only to the local population here but also patients from the neighbouring states with its integrated treatment mode combing modern and traditional medicine. The idea is to ensure that patients get the best holistic investigation, treatment, care, and follow-up.”

The director explained that there is also a growing demand from patients, both nationally and internationally, for preventive therapies and wellness programmes.
“India is uniquely positioned to offer inclusive treatments at competitive costs. The proposed infrastructural development and Ayush visa will boost our ability to make our mark as top traditional medicine providers in the world,” he said.
Sujata Kadam, Dean (academic and administration) at the Institute adds that AIIA has registered over 20-fold increase in patients load registering in OPD over the past three years.
Initially, the institute had six OPDs, which has now increased to 26.
“We have grown from catering to 25 to 30 OPD patients daily to about 700-900 patients daily. From 20-beds that we started with we have now grown into a 150-bed hospital offering facilities for dental care, cardiac department, de-addiction, diabetes care, and mental health treatment.”
The Institute has already got sanction to add five modular operation theatres and is also integrating AI tools and software for diagnosis. “We are now regularly getting patients from neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka,” she added.

Senior Ayush Ministry officials added that the institute is developing a research ecosystem focused on evidence-based Ayurveda, including the launch of the Ayurveda Research Monitoring System (ARMS) and working in collaborations with various institutions for research in areas such as integrative oncology and biodiversity.
The traditional medicine sector in India, primarily regulated under the Ministry of AYUSH, has registered rapid economic growth, with the industry expanding nearly eight-fold in under a decade to over $43.4 billion (approx. ₹1.37 lakh crore in manufacturing revenues) by 2025.
This growth, according to experts, is driven by a surge in demand for preventive healthcare, with Ayurveda holding a 71.1% share of the sector in 2025.
