Alphabet (GOOGL, Financials) is facing new UK rules that give publishers more control over how their content appears in Google’s AI search tools.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority said Google must let publishers opt out of having their content used in AI-generated search features. The rules are aimed at giving news organizations and website owners more control as AI summaries change how people find information online.
Publishers have been worried that AI Overviews and similar tools could reduce traffic to their sites by answering users’ questions directly in search results.
Google said it is testing controls that let publishers manage how their links and content appear in AI search. Sites that opt out would not receive traffic from AI Overviews or AI Mode, but they could still appear in regular search results.
The regulator also wants clearer attribution and links when publisher content is used in AI-generated answers.
For investors, the financial impact may be limited for now. Still, the decision adds to growing global scrutiny of Google’s search dominance and AI strategy.
