Judge orders Paramount to temporarily pause Warner Bros acquisition

July 20 (Reuters) – A coalition of states led โ€Œby California won a pause of โ€ŒParamount’s $110 billion acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on โ€‹Monday, after they argued letting the merger close would irreparably harm competition.

California and 11 states sued on July 13, arguing the deal โ€Œwould create โ a media behemoth with the power to raise prices in film โ and television.

If the deal is allowed to close, Paramount would soon begin cutting jobs โ€‹and sharing โ€‹sensitive information with โ€‹Warner Bros., actions that โ€Œare hard to undo if the merger is ultimately found to be illegal, the states argued.

The lawsuit, filed in Oakland federal court, threatens to derail Paramount CEO David โ€ŒEllison’s bid to transform โ€‹his company into a โ€‹major rival โ€‹of Netflix and Disney.

Paramount has said โ€Œthe lawsuit distorts settled โ€‹antitrust law, โ€‹and that delaying the transaction would only harm entertainment workers who have already โ€‹suffered through โ€Œyears of industry disruption.
