MOL Opens New Solar and Battery Storage Project in Hungary

Hungarian energy giant MOL Group has inaugurated a new solar park and battery storage facility at its Algy? site, expanding the company’s renewable energy portfolio in Central Europe.

The project combines a 37.4-MWp solar park with a 20-MW/40-MWh battery energy storage system, allowing MOL to store surplus renewable electricity and help manage fluctuations in power generation.

Together with MOL’s existing generation assets at Algy?, the new solar facility is capable of covering the site’s entire electricity demand. MOL estimates the project will cut carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 13,000 tonnes annually, while reducing its reliance on purchased electricity.

The solar park is expected to generate electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of roughly 22,500 households.

“Green electricity generated from our own sources reduces our reliance on external energy supplies, while the battery storage system contributes to the stability of the national power grid,” MOL Group Chief Strategic Officer Gyรถrgy Bacsa said.

The solar facility was constructed by Hungarian energy company ALTEO Plc., in which MOL and its partners hold a 73.8% stake.

MOL now operates nine solar parks in Hungary with combined capacity of 405 MW, alongside two battery storage facilities totaling 80 MWh. The company plans to expand its Hungarian battery storage portfolio substantially, targeting 500 MWh by 2030.

Across Central Europe, MOL’s photovoltaic portfolio has now reached 415 MWp, which the company estimates reduces annual CO2 emissions by around 160,000 tonnes.
