Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG) (NASDAQ:GOOGL) announced Nano Banana 2, the successor to its viral AI image-generation tool firstreleased in August 2025. Built on Gemini 3.1 Flash Image, the updated model introduces capabilities previously reserved for the Pro tier, including broader world knowledge and improved precision text rendering.

The tool will become the default model within the Gemini app across Fast, Thinking, and Pro modes, and will roll out simultaneously in Google Search’s AI Mode, Lens, and the Flow video creation tool. The original Nano Banana attracted 13 million first-time Gemini users within its first four days, according to Reuters.

Google has increasingly been folding its image tools directly into consumer products rather than releasing them as separate experiments. Making Nano Banana 2 the default inside Gemini, Search AI Mode, and Lens means the model will be used in everyday queries.

Alphabet shares were down 2.36% in intraday trading, a move that tracked broader market weakness. The update itself did not trigger a noticeable stock reaction, but it keeps Alphabet active in a segment where image generation has become one of the most visible entry points for consumer AI.
