Oct 14 – Alphabet’s Google said it will invest $9 billion through 2027 to grow its artificial intelligence infrastructure footprint in South Carolina.

Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) shares climbed about 3% on Monday.

The investment will expand Google’s long-running Berkeley County data center and fund construction of two additional facilities in Dorchester County. The company said the plan is part of a wider effort to strengthen its AI computing backbone across the United States and abroad.

Alongside the data center buildout, Google will provide grants for a workforce program aimed at training more than 160 apprentices for roles in the state’s technology and energy industries.

The tech group has already committed over $4.5 billion in South Carolina since 2007, when it opened its first Berkeley County site. In 2024, the company said its activities supported about $6.4 billion in economic impact for local businesses and nonprofits.

The latest expansion underscores Google’s continued push to scale its AI infrastructure globally, with similar projects underway in the U.K., Belgium, and other markets.
