Swedish battery technology company Holyvolt is making a bold move to accelerate next-generation battery development, acquiring U.S.-based materials innovator Wildcat Discovery Technologies in a $73 million deal combining cash, equity, and milestone payments.
The acquisition brings together two complementary technologies that could significantly shorten the path from laboratory breakthroughs to commercial battery production. Wildcatโs proprietary High Throughput Platform can synthesize and test thousands of battery material combinations simultaneously, identifying optimal chemistries up to ten times faster than traditional research methods.
Combined with Holyvoltโs innovative manufacturing processโbased on screen-printing and water-based materials processingโthe partnership aims to streamline the entire battery development pipeline from molecular discovery to pilot-scale production.
โHolyvolt is focused on developing new processes to make batteries cleaner and more affordable, while Wildcat has been pursuing the same goals through materials innovation,โ said Holyvolt Founder and CEO Mathias Ingvarsson. โTogether, we are building what we believe is one of the most compelling technology platforms for the future of battery manufacturing.โ
Wildcatโs system generates terabyte-scale materials datasets designed for machine learning and artificial intelligence, allowing researchers to rapidly optimize battery performance and cost. The combined platform could significantly accelerate the development of advanced batteries for industries including automotive, aerospace, energy storage, and consumer electronics.
The deal follows Holyvoltโs recent โฌ20 million funding round and signals a growing push in Europe and North America to build competitive battery supply chains independent of Asia.
Beyond speed and performance improvements, the companies say the technology combination could reduce environmental impact and production costs. Holyvoltโs water-based manufacturing process replaces traditional solvent-based battery slurry systems, while Wildcatโs materials research includes cobalt- and nickel-free chemistries that could lower supply risks and costs.
Industry leaders see the merger as a potential turning point. Wildcat founder Prof. Peter Schultz compared the approach to a revolution already seen in pharmaceuticals.
โWith Holyvolt,โ he said, โwe can do for batteries what high throughput and AI have done for drug discovery.โ
