Comme des Garçons Perfumer Christian Astuguevieille Has Died

The Comme des Garçons perfumer and artist Christian Astuguevieille has died, a representative for the brand confirmed on Monday. He was 79.
In addition to his work with Comme des Garçons founder and designer Rei Kawakubo on its range of popular perfumes, Astuguevieille was a multidisciplinary artist who often worked with furniture and sculpture. He met Kawakubo in 1991 when Comme des Garçons displayed a showcase of his sculptures in its Tokyo store.
In partnership with Kawakubo, he created the brand’s first scent, Eau de Parfum, in 1994, which has a distinctive pebble-shaped bottle. Astuguevieille went on to develop further scents including Amazingreen, Concrete and Wonderoud.
In a statement, Comme des Garçons said his passing brought “profound sadness”, and that Astuguevieille was a “great innovator.”
“He is, and will remain, a pillar in the creation of our perfumes, which he developed in synergy with Rei Kawakubo,” it said.
