Dave Ramsey To Women With Financially Struggling Husbands: Stop the Blame Game — ‘The Last Thing He Needs’ Is A ‘Barking Chihuahua Around His Ankles’

Money problems are the biggest test a relationship can face and couples must support each other to survive financial stress, according to personal finance expert Dave Ramsey.
Discussing how financial strain impacts marriages on “The Ramsey Show,” he said money trouble delivers the biggest blow to a man’s self-esteem, and that criticism from a wife during those moments only makes things worse.
“Ladies, listen to me carefully,” Ramsey said. “Your man is struggling with his self-esteem more than in any time in his life. If you guys are in a financial pinch, it makes him feel bad about himself. The last thing he needs in the middle of something like that, ladies, is a barking chihuahua around his ankles. You resist the temptation, ladies, to tear him down.”

Ramsey’s Advice to Husbands
Ramsey gave the same message to husbands facing financial problems. He said women seek security from money and need reassurance that there is a plan and a way forward, warning that complaining only makes the situation worse.
“Guys, listen to me,” Ramsey said. “If you’re married and you’re struggling financially, your lady is afraid in a place you don’t even have. She has a security gland that you don’t have and her security gland is spasming.”

‘Don’t Throw Gas on The Fire’
Ramsey said it’s fine to talk openly about fears and financial problems, but endlessly complaining without working toward solutions or blaming each other only makes things worse. He urged couples to focus on action—selling things, picking up extra work, and fixing the problem together instead of turning money trouble into mutual blame.
“You sit down and go, okay, let’s do something about it,” Ramsey said. “Well, let’s get rid of this stupid car. And don’t go looking at him and go, you’re such an idiot when you bought these cars. He already feels like an idiot. And if we don’t sell these cars, it’s all going to go down the toilet. She doesn’t need you to say that. Don’t throw gas on the fire. Take the action steps without turning them into blame.”

Action ‘Changes Everything’
Ramsey said he has watched struggling couples turn their situation around by focusing on work and taking action as self-esteem rises and fear fades once a plan is underway. He urged people facing financial stress to stop distracting themselves with TV or entertainment and instead take the problem head-on.
“If you’ll go about your business of busting into it, moving your life around, taking an impact on your life instead of sitting around waiting on it to happen to you, it changes everything,” Ramsey said. “It suddenly changes your self-esteem, men and ladies. It suddenly helps your fear go away.”
