A former Connecticut state police trooper has been arrested and charged with collecting workers’ compensation benefits totaling $8,341.00 during his employment with the Connecticut Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP).
Jose Campos, age 32, of Winsted, was arrested by inspectors from the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control unit in the Chief State’s Attorney’s office. According to the arrest warrant affidavit, Campos misrepresented material facts related to his claimed injury. He claimed, contrary to witnesses, that while on duty at DESPP headquarters, he was struck on his lower back by a restroom door. He claimed that the door struck him with such force that it knocked him down to the floor and that he was further hit multiple times as others attempted to enter the restroom.
Campos was placed on temporary total disability status, a wage replacement benefit paid by the employer’s workers’ compensation insurance carrier while the claimant is unable to perform any type of work due to a work-related injury or illness. He received $8,341.00 in replacement wages.
The case will be prosecuted by the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Control Unit of the Office of the Chief State’s Attorney in Rocky Hill.
The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
