Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal held discussions with Airbus Chairman Rene Obermann and board members on Wednesday to discuss the company’s plans of investing in India and scope of enhancing collaboration.

 “Welcomed the Airbus Board, led by their Chairman, Rene Obermann to India. We had an engaging discussion on the tremendous opportunities offered by Bharat and the strong, growing partnership between Airbus and India’s aviation sector,” Goyal said in a post on ‘X’ on Thursday.

Goyal further said that he encouraged Airbus on their plans to deepen collaboration and increase investments in India and a testament to the strength and potential of India’s aerospace sector.

Growing interest

The Airbus board of directors held their meeting in New Delhi this week signalling the aircraft manufacturer’s growing interest in the country. This was the first board meeting in India since the company established its presence in the country about six decades ago.

In March this year, Airbus’ CEO Guillaume Faury announced that annual sourcing of components and services from India will be increased significantly to touch $2 billion before 2030. At present, the company is sourcing components and services of about $1.4 billion from India. 

In 2023, IndiGo placed a firm order for 500 A320 Family aircraft, setting the record for the biggest single purchase agreement in the history of commercial aviation, per a company statement.iation.
