The Commissionerate of Health and Family Welfare Services has issued guidelines regarding the establishment and operation of medical boards at the district level for age determination of juveniles in conflict with the law.
A circular issued by the Commissionerate mandates that the board should consist of specialists, including a physiologist, dental expert, radiologist, and forensic expert, and bars medical practitioners who are not members of the board from conducting the age assessment.
“All cases requiring age determination shall be referred exclusively to the duly constituted Medical Board, and not to any individual medical practitioner,” it reads.
The district surgeon will be responsible for the timely coordination of the medical board meetings, conducting medical examinations without delay, documenting proceedings, and submitting the final medical board report within the prescribed time.
Given that the post of physiologist does not function as a designated member of the medical board at the district level as per the existing administrative structure of the medical board, the physiologist from the nearest Medical College shall be co-opted as a member for the concerned cases, notes the circular from the Commissionerate.
