A former aide to an Alabama congressman, previously sentenced for health care fraud, has been cleared of insurance fraud and other charges related to claims made on her mother’s car in 2022.
Sherry McCormick, who was a case worker and advocate for veterans and disabled citizens for U.S. Rep. Barry Moore, said the investigation was politically motivated and was pushed by Alfa Insurance, one of the largest and most influential insurers in Alabama, according to news reports.
“What man intended for evil, God used for good,” McCormick said in a statement after the charges were dismissed in June, Alabama Political Reporter and other news sites reported. “ALFA and the State of Alabama tried to silence me, but I stood firm.”
McCormick reportedly filed a claim in August 2021, contending that the BMW had struck a deer. The claim was paid by Progressive Insurance the next month. A second claim was made in December, regarding an engine problem, after Alfa took over the policy, the news sites reported.
Alfa later filed a complaint with state authorities, and McCormick was indicted in October 2022, The Messenger and Al.com news sites reported.
A circuit judge in Dale County dismissed the charges on June 9, but required McCormick to reimburse Progressive for the deer claim because repairs were never made, according to WTVY news. The Political Reporter reported that McCormick had already reimbursed Progressive.
Further details were not available.
McCormick in 2018 pleaded guilty to health care fraud after submitting claims to Tricare, Medicare and another federal benefits program for medically unnecessary compounded medicines. She was sentenced to eight months in prison and was ordered to pay more than $447,700 in restitution, according to federal court records.
