Specialty Re/Insurer IQUW Bermuda Names Carpenter’s Mitchell as CUO

Specialty insurer and reinsurer IQUW Bermuda has announced the appointment of James Mitchell as chief underwriting officer (CUO) with immediate effect, as the Bermuda operation continues its strategic expansion across global reinsurance markets.

James Mitchell

Mitchell joins from Guy Carpenter, where he served as managing director, Global Specialties and North American Treaty, focusing on client advisory, data led Insights and supporting strategic growth in Bermuda.

Prior to that, he worked at RenaissanceRe for 13 years, where he held several senior positions across Bermuda and London, delivering profitable and strategic growth. His career also includes underwriting positions at Catlin Underwriting Agencies Ltd.

His appointment marks another significant milestone in IQUW Bermuda’s evolution, the insurer said.

As CUO of IQUW Bermuda, Mitchell will lead all reinsurance underwriting and will play a pivotal role in developing IQUW Bermuda’s underwriting culture of technical excellence, with a mandate to build strategic client and broker relationships.

“James is a significant hire for IQUW Bermuda, and we are delighted to welcome him to the Executive team” said Stephen Young, CEO of IQUW Bermuda. “His deep expertise in underwriting, portfolio management and digital innovation aligns perfectly with our ambitions to build a cutting-edge reinsurance platform. His leadership will be instrumental in accelerating our growth and delivering long-term value to clients, brokers and the global market.”

Mitchell’s appointment follows IQUW Bermuda’s announcement in September of plans to expand its product suite to include mortgage, credit, and cyber reinsurance, building on its strong capital base and A- (Excellent) rating from AM Best.
