The L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) has successfully performed more than 40 corneal neurotisation surgery procedures since 2019.
Corneal neurotisation is an advanced microsurgical technique aimed at restoring sensation in an anaesthetic cornea, a situation where the eye loses its natural nerve supply due to congenital causes, trauma, or surgical damage. Without sensation, the cornea becomes vulnerable to repeated injuries, chronic dryness, impaired healing, and eventual vision loss.
Explaining the procedure, Sayan Basu, Director, Centre for Ocular Regeneration, LVPEI., said it involves rerouting healthy nerves from areas such as the forehead or the leg and connecting them near the cornea using fine microsurgical techniques. Over time, these nerves grow into the cornea, restoring its ability to feel and react, thereby re-establishing functions like blinking and tearing, essential for protecting vision.
