Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-M) have developed a cost-effective, easy-to-use, and minimally-invasive continuous glucose monitoring device for diabetes patients.

Unlike conventional glucose monitoring devices, this one displays glucose readings directly on the patch. It boasts a modular system that combines reusable electronics and a low-power display unit with a disposable microneedle sensor patch, a press release said.

The system is designed to function on low power, extending battery life and reducing the frequency of charging. The display module and core innovations have been protected through multiple Indian patents.

The device was developed by researchers at the Electronic Materials and Thin Films Lab, under Parasuraman Swaminathan, professor, Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, IIT-M.

A start-up venture has already been formed to focus exclusively on refining the device, conducting clinical trials, and bringing it to the market. The researchers are in active discussions with medical device manufacturers to license the technology, the release said.
