Monday Weather | Strong winds and heavy rain continue statewide | Local

HONOLULU (Island News) — Windy and stormy weather continues across Hawaiʻi today, with strong winds, heavy rain, and hazardous conditions impacting many areas statewide.
A strong high-pressure system north of the islands and a low-pressure system to the southwest are creating very gusty winds. Overnight, wind gusts reached between 40 and 50 miles per hour, especially near mountains, valleys, and other wind-prone areas. Skies remain cloudy, and rain is widespread from Oʻahu eastward, with the heaviest rainfall focused on windward sides of the islands. Kauaʻi is seeing fewer showers compared to the rest of the state.
Windy conditions and periods of heavy rain are impacting much of the state today, with flood and high wind warnings in effect. Conditions are expected to slowly improve later today and tonight.
Because deep moisture is still over the islands, periods of heavy rain are expected to continue today, mainly along windward slopes and coasts. There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms. A Flood Watch remains in effect through 6 p.m. this evening, as flooding is possible in many areas.
Strong winds are also a concern today. While gusts eased slightly overnight, conditions are still expected to be windy. A High Wind Warning remains in effect through 6 p.m. for much of the state. Winds should begin to ease later this afternoon, though breezy conditions may continue into tonight.
On the Big Island, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for summit areas above 12,000 feet through this evening. Snow, strong winds, and dangerously cold conditions are expected at the highest elevations.
Marine and coastal conditions remain hazardous. Gale-force winds are affecting all Hawaiian waters, making boating dangerous. A High Surf Warning is in place for east-facing shores through tonight, with large and very rough surf. Surf heights are expected to slowly lower by Tuesday but will remain choppy as trade winds continue.
Conditions are expected to gradually improve later today and tonight, with decreasing rain and easing winds. From Tuesday through Friday, more typical trade wind weather is expected, with breezy conditions and passing showers mainly along windward and mauka areas.
Forecasters are also watching the potential for another round of heavy rain next weekend.
