Munich Re, a provider of reinsurance, primary insurance and insurance-related risk solutions, has announced the appointment of Walter Voigts-von Forster as the new CEO of its Africa Branch.

Voigts-von Forster’s appointment will be effective from 1 February 2026, pending regulatory approval.

In addition to his new role, Voigts-von Forster will continue to work as head of the non-life business unit for Munich Re Africa.

The incoming CEO brings more than 18 years of experience in the reinsurance sector, having joined Munich Re in 2007.

Throughout his tenure, he has held various positions including head of aviation treaty, based in Munich, Germany, and was appointed head of non-life business for Munich Re Africa in 2022.

In his new role, Voigts-von Forster will report to Roland Eckl, the chief executive for Munich Re Australasia, Greater China, MENA and Africa.

Voigts-von Forster succeeds Nico Conradie, who has decided to retire at the end of January 2026 after 23 years with the company, including a tenure as CEO of the Africa Branch since 2016.

Commenting on the changes, Eckl said: “Nico played a decisive role in writing the history of Munich Re in Africa, making us the leading international player in the market and our team a well-trusted partner to our clients. I would like to thank Nico for his contribution as CEO over the past ten years.

“I am confident that Walter’s deep expertise and familiarity with African markets and clients will position him well to continue to build on this success.”

Voigts-von Forster added: “I am excited and honoured to be selected to follow Nico in leading Munich Re Africa Branch. Munich Re is in Africa for the long-term, doing long-term business with long-term partners.

“Under my leadership, Munich Re will continue to be a stable reinsurer that can be relied upon. Together with our highly skilled employees from all of sub-Saharan Africa, I will be dedicated to providing the best possible reinsurance solutions to our clients across the continent.”

In June, Munich Re Specialty-North America set up a new life sciences division to expand its insurance offerings.

The new unit will cater to multiple sectors such as animal health, clinical trials and contract services.

“Munich Re appoints new CEO for Africa branch” was originally created and published by Life Insurance International, a GlobalData owned brand.
