Nadella Takes Direct Control of Microsoft AI

This article first appeared on GuruFocus.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) CEO Satya Nadella is getting deeply involved in the company’s AI products as concerns grow that Copilot is not quite living up to its promise.

According to The Information, Nadella has become a regular voice in an internal Teams channel with about 100 senior engineers, jumping in when he feels AI features are underperforming. He also leads a weekly meeting where he pushes teams hard on execution. In one recent email, Nadella was blunt about Copilot’s struggles to connect smoothly with Gmail and Outlook, saying those features for the most part don’t really work, especially compared with recent gains made by Google’s Gemini.

Inside Microsoft, Nadella has effectively stepped into the role of chief AI product driver. He has delegated other duties to focus on AI development and is personally recruiting top talent, even approving unusually high compensation to compete with labs like OpenAI and Google DeepMind.

Microsoft is spending heavily on AI, and Nadella’s hands-on approach signals this is a critical moment. Investors will be watching closely to see if tighter leadership leads to better Copilot adoption and real returns.
