National Centre of Ageing procures instruments worth ₹60 lakh, books for PG students costing ₹3 lakh

The National Centre of Ageing (NCA), Guindy, has procured and put to use new endoscopy, dental, and ophthalmic instruments worth ₹60 lakh. It has also purchased books worth ₹3 lakh for the library for postgraduate students.

According to a press release, the NCA celebrated the International Day of Older Persons 2025 recently. Along with the dedication of the instruments and books, a ‘Healthy Ageing’ camp was also conducted. A total of 1,377 people attended the camp and were screened for hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and cancer, while lab investigations and ECG were also done and specialist opinion was obtained for selected patients.

Information, education, and communication kiosks on various health programmes including Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam, the National Blindness Control Programme, National Prevention and Control of Deafness Programme, and National Mental Health Programme were held.

NCA, which was inaugurated on February 25, 2024, has treated 3,80,594 elderly people in the outpatient department and 10,612 in-patients. It provides daily outpatient services and special facilities including comprehensive geriatric assessment, psycho-geriatric, incontinence, fall prevention, and frailty clinics. It has 55 intensive care unit beds and five modular theatres. A total of 296 major and 2,048 minor surgeries were performed.

Health Minister Ma. Subramanian, Advisor (Cost) and Joint Secretary (AB-PMJAY), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MOHFW), Lalit Wadhwa, Deputy Director General of Health Services, MOHFW, Alok Mathur, and State nodal officers of the National Programme for the Health Care of the Elderly from Meghalaya and Telangana participated.
