New mural of Iryna Zarutska completed in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Months after Iryna Zarutska was fatally stabbed on Charlotte’s light rail, another tribute to her is taking shape as a part of a nationwide effort.
At Mr. C’s on West Morehead Street, a mural of the slain Ukrainian refugee is now on display on an exterior wall facing the street.
Russian artist SAV 45 is the man behind the mural.
“I just want to paint a good mural so people can remember,” he said. “For me as an artist it’s a good opportunity to show my work in certain places and to help the project.”
Remember Iryna is a collection of murals in California, Washington D.C. and Florida, where organizers have recruited artists to paint them.

SAV 45 painted Zarutska in Los Angeles and Chicago before, but says that creating her likeness in Charlotte has a different feeling.
“For me it’s like an honor if (her family) accepts this work and they like it. So for me it’s the best no matter what people say and think,” said SAV 45.
It took him several days to finish the artwork as he painted through cold conditions, bundled up in several layers and relied on his decade of experience to craft the mural.
SAV 45 also has a message for the Queen City.
“To care about each other and live in peace. Stay more connected to each other”
