Nifty Bank index began today’s session with a gap-down at 59,967 versus yesterday’s close of 60,064. It slipped after opening and is now hovering around 59,700, down 0.6 per cent.

The advance-decline ratio stands at 3-11, showing a bearish bias. Kotak Mahindra Bank (up 0.75 per cent) is the top gainer followed by Axis Bank and ICICI Bank, up 0.25 per cent each.

On the other hand, IndusInd Bank (down 1.9 per cent) is the top loser followed by Punjab National Bank (down 1.6 per cent).

Nifty PSU Bank has lost nearly 1.4 per cent so far today whereas Nifty Private Bank is down 0.1 per cent. Therefore, public sector banks are facing higher selling pressure than their private peers.

Nifty Bank futures

The February expiry Nifty Bank futures opened today’s session slightly lower at 60,140 versus yesterday’s close of 60,255. It is now trading at 59,880, down 0.7 per cent.

The contract breaking the support at 60,000 is a bearish sign. We expect Nifty Bank futures to drop from the current level, possibly reaching 59,500, a support. Subsequent support is 59,000.

On the other hand, if the contract recovers, it will face resistance at 60,000 and 60,100. So long as these levels hold, the bias will be bearish. Therefore, traders can consider selling Nifty Bank futures.
