Penny Black is back, sharing the tittle-tattle she overheard at insurance industry events, reviewing the quality of buffets at conferences, and giving a thumbs up – or down – to the sector’s social media posts.
Roxburgh’s first day
I was delighted to see the LinkedIn post of the newly appointed Lloyd’s chair, Charles Roxburgh, honouring his first day in the brand-new role.
It reminded me of the joy of back-to-school season, and I couldn’t help but picture him picking out a brand new suit, similar to school children showing off their fresh pair of shoes.
He recalled his experience working in Lloyd’s closely with then-chair Sir David Rowland back in the 1990s during some trying times, and seeing as I’ve been around since 1840, I too have experienced more than my fair share of choppy waters and share Roxburgh’s fondness for the bonds that can be forged in such predicaments.
The entire Insurance Post team wishes him all the best during his tenure at the top of the “great British success story”, as he describes it.
Penny’s Lunch Box
Haggie Partners offered quite a range of canapés at their annual drinks. As they offered no name badges for each dish, I struggled to identify what I could opt to consume, so I simply let my tastebuds lead the way.
What seemed like fried dough balls with a dip dolloped on top each one were my personal favourite and I made sure to corner that section of the table, but the other offerings left far less of a lasting impression. Three stars.
Out of context
“At times, I’ve been involved in major events dominating the news, seen bombs go off, flown by helicopter to sites in conflict zones, and even been told that ‘Vladimir Putin knows I’m here’.”
