Yes, it is a scam. No reputable business would ask you to forge a check and deposit it. Checks are printed on paper and signed by authorized signatories, they cannot be emailed and then “printed at office depot”.
If you try to deposit such a check, it will eventually bounce either because it is drawn on an account that doesn’t exist, or because it is drawn on an account whose owner has nothing to do with you and didn’t authorize it. However, while that may take weeks, the scammers will ask you to pay them back some or all of the money under one guise or the other – that money will forever be lost for you, and you’ll be left explaining to the bank and the police the deposit of a forged check.
