ST. LOUIS – If you’re in the City of St. Louis this afternoon, you’ll hear tornado sirens. But don’t be alarmed; it’s only a test.
A siren test is planned for noon CT in the City of St. Louis and may possibly be heard in surrounding areas.
Testing begins at noon. Sirens will sound every 30 minutes and testing could last up to four hours on Thursday.
The City Emergency Management Agency says the siren tests are part of its efforts to install new outdoor warning sirens.
“This testing will assist with the research necessary to ensure new sirens have the best reach possible to everyone in the City of St. Louis, residents and visitors alike,” said Sarah Russell, Commissioner of the City’s Emergency Management Agency via a news release. “The City installed the current Outdoor Warning Siren system 25 years ago, and over that time, the City’s landscape has changed substantially in some areas.”
The City of St. Louis has allocated $3.9 million toward a replacement system. The tests are one of several steps that CEMA are needed to improve its ability to provide adequate coverage for emergency notifications.
Sirens are typically tested on the first Monday or every month and otherwise used during severe weather events.
