Uber (NYSE:UBER) is leaning further into its robotaxi ambitions, committing more than $100 million to build a fast-charging network tailored specifically for autonomous vehicles, starting in Los Angeles, Dallas, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
The plan is straightforward but strategic. Uber will roll out high-speed charging hubs and smaller pit stop locations designed to keep AV fleets moving efficiently in dense urban markets. It is also locking in utilization guarantee agreements with EVgo (NASDAQ:EVGO) across New York, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco, while teaming up with Electra, Hubber, and Ionity in major European cities. At the same time, Uber continues partnerships with Lucid (NASDAQ:LCID), Nuro, May Mobility, and Momenta as it positions itself against heavyweights like Waymo (NASDAQ:GOOG) and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA).
On its latest earnings call, CEO Dara Khosrowshahi called autonomy a multitrillion-dollar opportunity and said Uber would pursue targeted growth investments across 6 strategic areas, including AV. Uber’s mobility chief, Pradeep Parameswaran, emphasized that scalable charging is essential if cities want electrification and autonomy to truly work at scale.
