United Petfood has entered Canada by acquiring a production facility in Quebec from local peer Legault Group.

In a brief statement, United Petfood described the deal as a โ€œlandmark momentโ€. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The site in Drummondville, which makes dry pet food, started operations in 2023.

United Petfood Group CEO Dries Eeckhout said: โ€œThe factory is very well invested with the newest petfood production technology and offers possibilities for further expansion. We continue to see interesting opportunities for growth in both the Canadian market and internationally.โ€

Two years ago, Belgium-based United Petfood entered the US through the acquisition of a plant in Indiana.

Just Food has approached family-owned Legault Group for comment. The company also owns wet pet-food manufacturer Food 4 Pets Canada and the pet-store chains Mondou and Ren’s Pets.

United Petfood’s move in Canada is the second acquisition the company has announced in a week.

The business has also teamed up with Turkish partner Lider Petfood bought a dry pet-food factory in the country.

The companies said the facility in the western Turkish city of Kฤฑrklareli would help meet โ€œsurgingโ€ domestic and international demand and serve as a โ€œgatewayโ€ to eastern Europe.

Private-label supplier United Petfood produces dry and wet pet food, biscuits and snacks for cats and dogs.

The group operates production facilities across Europe, including in the UK, France and Poland. It exports to more than 110 countries and employs over 3,500 staff.

“United Petfood enters Canada” was originally created and published by Just Food, a GlobalData owned brand.
