Applied Nutrition strikes deal for assets of US peer Nutrablend

Applied Nutrition has bought the majority of the assets of US-based sports nutrition manufacturer Nutrablend Group.

In a statement today (1 June), the UK-based sports nutrition business said it paid $16m (ยฃ12m) in cash for the acquisition.

The deal includes a freehold, โ€œfully fitted-outโ€ production and logistics facility in Buffalo in New York state.

The six-acre facility includes five powder filling lines and three stick-pack filling machines, along with an inventory estimated at around $5m.

Nutrablendโ€™s two in-house supplement brands, Basic Supplements and GR8 Lifestyle, are also part of the transaction.

London-listed Applied Nutrition said the acquisition โ€œsignificantly enhancesโ€ the groupโ€™s footprint in North America.

It expects the facility to provide production capacity of up to about $300m of revenue per year in the US. The group said this will support โ€œfuture customer demandโ€ across its AN and ABE ranges.

Applied Nutrition expects the deal to lead to lower freight, logistics and import duty costs in North America. It also pointed to โ€œgreater operational and supply chain resilienceโ€, with less reliance on cross-border shipping.

The company plans to move powder manufacturing from its UK base and US co-manufacturers to the Buffalo facility. The shift will lead to “increased UK manufacturing headroom”, it added.

Applied Nutrition CEO Thomas Ryder said: โ€œThe acquisition of a US manufacturing site significantly strengthens our ability to support ongoing growth in the region and provides us with the ability to expand our North American offering, harnessing Nutrablend’s experienced management team.

โ€œImportantly, it allows us to launch new products at the same pace as we do in the UK, improving our responsiveness to consumer and market demand and reinforcing a clear competitive advantage for Applied.โ€

Following the acquisition, the Basic and GR8 brands will operate under the AN Supps business. The white-label manufacturing arm will trade as AN Labz.

The deal brings around 100 Nutrablend employees into the group, including its management team, as well as in-house R&D and design staff.

The business said the transaction is expected to be “earnings enhancing” in its 2027 financial year, contributes at least an extra $30m of revenue at a “high single-digit EBITDA margin”. Around 65% of that revenue is expected to come from white-label manufacturing.

Alongside the deal, Applied Nutrition upgraded its outlook for the financial year ending 31 July, citing strong trading and โ€œcontinued momentumโ€ across the group.

Excluding any contribution from Nutrablend, the board expects its annual revenue to be about ยฃ148m, a figure ahead of โ€œcurrent consensus market expectationsโ€.

The group, which went public in 2024, also unveiled a new licensing tie-up with Mondelez International. The agreement covers sports-nutrition products sold in the US and Canada that will be co-branded under the AN Supps, Sour Patch Kids and Swedish Fish brands.

The products are to go on sale from August. They will initially be stocked in 2,200 Walmart 1,300 GNC stores.
