Chevron Licenses Enhanced Oil Recovery Technology to ZL Chemicals

Chevron has signed a technology licensing agreement with ZL Chemicals that will allow the chemical company to commercialize Chevron-developed surfactant technology under the Vantisโ„ข brand for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) applications in shale and tight reservoirs.

Under the agreement, ZL Chemicals will market products and field services based on Chevron’s proprietary technology, targeting both enhanced recovery from existing wells and optimization of new wells. Chevron said the move enables broader commercial deployment of technology it has already developed and applied in its own unconventional operations, while allowing the company to continue developing next-generation surfactant technologies internally.

Chevron Chief Technology and Engineering Officer Ryder Booth said the agreement allows the company to extend the value of its advanced chemical technologies beyond its own operations through a commercial partner. ZL Chemicals President Echo Liu said the company will provide end-to-end deployment, from laboratory evaluation and quality control to field execution.

The agreement reflects a broader trend of major oil producers monetizing proprietary technologies through licensing partnerships rather than limiting their use to internal operations. Chemical EOR technologies have attracted renewed attention as operators seek to maximize production from mature shale assets amid capital discipline and slowing productivity gains in some U.S. basins. By partnering with a specialist chemicals provider, Chevron can expand the reach of its technology without building a standalone commercial services business.
