May 22 (Reuters) – Alphabet’s Google on Friday appealed a Washington federal judge’s ruling โthat it holds illegal monopolies in online search โand related advertising.
Here are some details:
โข Google argued that U.S. โJudge Amit Mehta made legal errors in his 2024 ruling, which found the company illegally blocked competitors by paying billions of dollars annually to firms including Apple โto be the โ default search engine on new devices.
โข The arrangements did not prevent the device โ makers and browser developers from promoting rival search services like Microsoft’s Bing, Google argued.
โข The company said it โexcelled in โthe market fairly by โdeveloping a “superior search engine โthrough hard work, bold innovation, and shrewd business decisions.”
โข The U.S. Department of Justice is expected to file papers making its own arguments in July. A spokesperson for the DOJ declined to comment.
โข Mehta โhad ordered Google to share โsome search data with competitors, โpotentially including artificial โintelligence companies such as OpenAI, to restore โcompetition. An appeals court ruling โin Google’s โfavour would overturn that order.
โข If Google loses at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the โDistrict of Columbia โCircuit, it could appeal to the U.S. โSupreme Court.
