Adobe (ADBE) trades near $250, down about 28% over the past year while the S&P 500 gained about 16%. Over the past three months the stock has returned about 21%. The market pays 13.9 times trailing earnings for a company that just reported record quarterly revenue. A multiple that low prices Adobe as if meaningful growth is off the table.ย The scenario below tests that pricing, and its answer rests on whether Adobeโs free users ever start paying.
Where Would Adobeโs Next Leg Come From?
Revenue does most of the work. The scenario grows it 10.3% a year for three years, a light haircut to the 11.5% Adobe managed over the past twelve months. Margin takes a little off, and earnings still rise about a third.
The lever sits in the creative franchise. Creative and marketing professionals brought in $4.65 billion of Adobeโs $6.56 billion of subscription revenue in fiscal Q3 2026. Acrobat and Express sit behind them, with monthly active users past 900 million.
Then the multiple takes its turn. Adobeโs P/E of 13.9x sits against a three-year average of 30.8x, and the scenario lets it re-rate part of the way, to 15.6x, because growth and margins are holding up. On those assumptions the stock would be worth about $374 in three years, roughly 49% above today.
| ADBE | Last twelve months | Scenario, year three |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $25.2 billion | $33.9 billion |
| Revenue growth a year | 11.5% | 10.3% |
| Net margin | 28.7% | 28.4% |
| Earnings | $7.2 billion | $9.6 billion |
| P/E | 13.9x | 15.6x |
| Share price | $250.5 | $373.76 |
| Upside | 49% |
What Has To Go Right For Adobe To Get There?
Adobe raised its revenue targets in September, but that guidance covers only the final quarter of fiscal 2026. Beyond that single quarter, virtually the entire three-year scenario is an extrapolation rather than management guidance.
Adobeโs backlog of contracted revenue, which it calls RPO, grew 8% year over year in fiscal Q3 2026. Management ties that single-digit pace to its own choice: Adobe is routing new users into a free funnel instead of into paid contracts.
So Adobe is trading revenue today for users it hopes to charge later. Creative freemium monthly active users, which overlap with the Express footprint, crossed 100 million (up over 70% year over year) and sit in the free tier by design.
Management says that engagement is starting to translate into recurring revenue, and Fireflyโs ending recurring revenue across its apps and credit packs grew 40% quarter over quarter. Adobe also held off on Creative Cloud pricing actions, calling them short-term relief that would have mattered less than winning users.
What Could Shrink Adobeโs Upside?
The scenario needs the market to pay a little more for each dollar Adobe earns. But the market doesnโt have to play along. Hold the P/E at todayโs 13.9x and the upside falls from 49% to 33%.
The freemium bet decides whether the market ever pays up, and that verdict arrives one quarter at a time. Owners already know what the waiting costs. Over the past three years Adobeโs largest peak-to-trough fall was about 70%, and it still trades about 61% below its three-year high.
| If this changes | Upside potential |
|---|---|
| Nothing (the scenario) | 49% |
| Revenue grows two points slower | 41% |
| Net margin returns to its three-year average | 46% |
| The P/E stays where it is | 33% |
| Five years instead of three | 82% |
So Do You Buy Adobe For The Next Three Years?
If you are torn, you are reading it correctly. The scenario says $374 in three years. Adobe has already put its shareholders through one brutal pullback, and the recovery so far has only been partial. Chasing that upside only makes sense if you can comfortably stomach another steep drop without hitting the sell button.
