BENGALURU: India’s balance of payments recorded a deficit ​of $8.1 billion in the ​April-June quarter, compared with a surplus of $4.5 billion ​a year earlier, despite swinging to a surplus in June, central bank data showed on Friday.

India’s overall balance of payments recorded a surplus ‌of $2.9 billion ⁠in ⁠June, compared with a deficit of $0.4 billion a year earlier, after deficits ​in the first two months of the financial year.

India had reported a balance of payments deficit of $6.6 billion in April and $4.4 billion in May

In June, ​thecurrent account balance stood at a ⁠deficit of $6.2 ‌billion compared with a surplus of $1.2 ​billion last ​year. The current account balance slipped to ⁠a deficit of $3.1 billion in the quarter to ​June compared with a deficit of $2.9 billion in ​the same period last year.


Net transfers, which include remittances from Indian workers overseas, rose to $11.9 billion in June from $10.9 billion a year ago.
The capital account, which includes foreign portfolio investments, saw an inflow of $9.1 billion ‌in June 2026 compared with an outflow of $1.6 billion in the same month last year.Worries ​over India’s ​balance of ⁠payments deficit have been a crucial pain point for the rupee in 2026, as the Iran war lifted crude oil prices ​sharply and caused unabated capital outflows. Policy measures to boost dollar inflows have prompted analysts to forecast a near neutral or modest surplus in BoP for the fiscal year ending March 2027.
