Steve Eisman, the investor who famously bet against the subprime mortgage bubble and host of The Real Eisman Playbook podcast, told CNBC on July 27, 2026 that he has exited a long-held position in Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL | GOOGL Price Prediction) specifically to dial back his exposure to the artificial intelligence trade. His warning to investors is broader than one stock: the 60/40 portfolio most Americans hold in their 401(k) is, in his view, a single-factor AI bet in disguise.
โI sold my Google a couple of months ago. Iโve owned Google. I canโt even tell you how long Iโve owned Google, but I felt I wanted to reduce my exposure to AI,โ Eisman said. The sale is framed as risk reduction, not a bearish call on Alphabetโs business.
The โItโs All One Tradeโ Thesis
Eismanโs central argument is that portfolio diversification has become an illusion because AI-linked exposure now dominates both sides of a standard allocation.
โItโs all one trade. Itโs literally one. I mean, even people who think theyโre diversified because they own 60% stocks and 40% bonds are missing the fact that theyโre actually not diversified because of their 60%. More than 50% of it is tech and AI related. And of the 40% of bonds, most of the new issuance of bonds is AI related,โ he said.
The math behind that concern is visible in the indexes. The Nasdaq-100 is up 21.1% over the past year, while the S&P 500 has climbed 16.47%. BlackRockโs 2026 outlook flagged the same phenomenon, arguing that allocations made under the guise of diversification may now in fact be big active bets because an ever-larger share of U.S. equity returns reflects a single common driver.
Why Google, And Why Now
Alphabetโs Q2 2026 report, filed July 22, 2026, shows why exiting the name is a statement about the AI trade rather than the company. Alphabet delivered EPS of $9.11 against a $3.04 consensus, revenue of $119.80 billion up 24.2% year over year, and Google Cloud revenue of $24.77 billion accelerating to 82% growth.
The bill for that growth is the concern. Capital expenditures hit $44.92 billion in the quarter, free cash flow turned negative at -$5.86 billion, long-term debt climbed from $46.5 billion to $98.2 billion, and the stock buyback program was suspended. Full-year 2026 CapEx guidance sits at $175 to $185 billion. Shares are down 7.4% over the past month even after a 66.86% one-year gain.
A Binary Outcome
Eisman frames the setup as offering little middle ground. โIf this is a binary situation where AI succeeds and the market continues to push higher and higherโฆ I think we have a big correction,โ he said. He is arguing that if AI does not deliver, the correction could be severe and widespread because real diversification does not exist at current allocations.
He also flagged a specific pressure point at the model layer. โI think one of the bottlenecks is that Anthropic and OpenAI are responsible for a lot of the spending that people are doing. And Anthropic and OpenAI have models that are now much more expensive than the competition. And I think that is a potential bottleneck,โ Eisman said. Both companies are privately held, so retail investors cannot directly own or short them, but their pricing shapes the unit economics of every hyperscaler CapEx dollar.
Sitting In Cash
For now, Eisman is not rotating into a new theme. โIโm just sitting. You know, Iโve got cash. So I can try and figure out what to do,โ he said.
The takeaway for readers watching their own 401(k) balances: prediction markets currently assign a 0.923 probability that GOOGL closes above $310 by month-end, and Wall Streetโs average analyst target sits at $428.12. Eismanโs warning is that those bullish signals, and the index gains behind them, ride on one factor. If that factor wavers, the equity sleeve and the bond sleeve of a โbalancedโ portfolio may move together rather than offsetting each other.
