Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is making a big move in Australia, committing $18 billion to expand its AI and cloud footprint in what is now its largest investment in the country.

The plan is pretty ambitious. Over the next few years, Microsoft wants to grow its infrastructure capacity by more than 140% by 2029, adding more data centers and boosting the computing power needed for AI workloads. It is not just about hardware either. The company is also putting money into cyber defense and large scale training programs to help people build AI related skills. This builds on an earlier A$5 billion investment that already expanded its presence to 29 sites across three Azure regions.

Zoom out a bit, and this fits into a much bigger picture. Microsoft, along with peers like Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOG), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), and Meta (NASDAQ:META), is pouring huge amounts into AI infrastructure, with total industry spending expected to reach around $650 billion this year. The thinking is simple. Build capacity now while demand is still ramping, and make sure you are in the best position when it really takes off.
