Nvidia Corp. (NVDA), Alphabet Inc.’s Google (GOOG, GOOGL) and Emerald AI on Wednesday launched the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), a coalition that aims to advance data centers’ ability to dynamically adjust their electricity use in response to power-grid conditions.
The approach could enable faster, larger grid connections for AI infrastructure by letting data centers reduce or shift electricity demand when the grid is constrained, Nvidia said.
Both NVDA and GOOGL stocks were trading marginally higher at the open on Wednesday.
AI Data Centers That Can Adjust Power Demand
Under the model described by Nvidia, a flexible data center could respond to grid conditions by shifting computing workloads, using stored energy, tapping paired generation or reducing demand during system contingencies.
Such flexibility could make better use of existing grid capacity, reduce demand during periods of stress and potentially avoid or delay some infrastructure upgrades, Nvidia noted. It could also give utilities and grid operators greater confidence to connect AI facilities on shorter timelines.
The alliance will be technology-neutral and performance-based, meaning requirements will focus on what a facility can deliver rather than the particular hardware or software it uses.
AEMA Targets Common Grid Standards
AEMA plans to set common standards for how quickly and reliably data centers can adjust power use, while developing faster grid-connection pathways for customers that can verify those flexibility commitments.
The alliance will bring together companies across the AI and power industries, including AI platforms, infrastructure providers, data center operators, power producers, utilities and regional grid operators. Nvidia said AEMA will work with utilities on interconnection solutions and advocate for policies that recognize grid-responsive demand.
The initiative expands on existing work between Nvidia and Emerald AI on AI factories that can respond to grid conditions in real time. Earlier demonstrations showed flexible computing workloads being reduced or rescheduled while higher-priority AI workloads continued operating.
Data Center Power Demand Is Rising Rapidly
The alliance comes as electricity demand from data centers continues to accelerate. The International Energy Agency’s (IEA) latest assessment estimates that global data center electricity consumption rose 17% in 2025 to about 485 terawatt-hours, while electricity use at AI-focused data centers jumped 50%.
The agency expects total data center consumption to roughly double to 950 TWh by 2030, about 3% of global electricity demand. The pressure is particularly visible in the U.S. Data centers accounted for roughly 50% of the increase in U.S. electricity consumption in 2025, according to the IEA.

Retail investor sentiment around NVDA and GOOGL remains in ‘bearish’ territory on Stocktwits.
So far this year, Nvidia shares have risen more than 13%. Meanwhile, GOOGL stock has rallied nearly 10% in the same period.
