Moonshot AI Files For IPO At B Valuation – Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT)

Moonshot AI has confidentially filed for a Hong Kong IPO that could raise about $3 billion, Reuters reported Thursday, citing people familiar with the matter.

The Kimi developer is also in talks with Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ:MSFT), Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) and Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) over deals that could bring its models deeper into U.S. cloud platforms.

Moonshot is valued at $50 billion in a funding round still in progress and has raised more than $5.5 billion since 2023.

U.S. Cloud Giants Eye Kimi K3

Moonshot is in early-stage talks with Azure, Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud over revenue-sharing agreements for Kimi K3.

Reuters reported last week that Moonshot is seeking as much as 30% of K3-related revenue. Any agreement could mark the first major revenue-sharing pact between a Chinese AI developer and a major U.S. cloud provider.

K3 has 2.8 trillion parameters, which Moonshot says makes it the worldโ€™s largest open-weight model. Its size makes it expensive to run, helping explain why demand after its July launch strained Moonshotโ€™s computing capacity and why access to U.S. cloud infrastructure could matter.

Alibaba Is Backer, Rival and Compute Supplier

Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. (NYSE:BABA) invested about $800 million for roughly 36% of Moonshot in fiscal 2024, implying a valuation near $2.2 billion.

Moonshotโ€™s reported $50 billion valuation is roughly 23 times higher. Later funding rounds mean Alibabaโ€™s current ownership is unclear.

Moonshot has a computing agreement giving it access to about 20,000 Nvidia chips through Alibaba, Reuters reported in July. Alibaba also competes with Moonshot through its Qwen models.

Polymarket traders give Alibaba a 76% chance of having Chinaโ€™s highest-ranked AI model at the end of September, versus about 17% for Moonshot. Nearly $198,000 has traded on the market, which resolves using Arena.aiโ€™s Text Arena overall leaderboard on Sept. 30.

Washington Risk Hangs Over IPO

Moonshot also faces scrutiny in Washington. U.S. officials have accused the company of using restricted Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ:NVDA) chips and distilling capabilities from Anthropic models.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said he may add the company to a U.S. trade blacklist. Moonshot disputes the distillation allegation.

That puts its U.S. cloud talks in an unusual position. Microsoft, Amazon and Google are exploring deeper ties with one of Chinaโ€™s leading AI companies just as it prepares to go public and faces possible restrictions from Washington.
